Sugarcane — 4Water, nutrients & weeds

  • Nitrogen and potash top dressing

Apply nitrogen and potash in three equal splits at 30, 60 and 90 days: 275 kg N + 112.5 kg K2O per hectare in assured-water (coastal and flow irrigated) areas; 225 kg N + 112.5 kg K2O in lift-irrigated, water-scarce areas; 175 kg N + 112.5 kg K2O in jaggery areas. For zinc-deficient soils, apply 37.5 kg zinc sulphate per hectare basally.

  • Irrigation by growth phase

Germination phase (0–35 days): shallow wetting with 2–3 cm of water at short intervals, especially in sandy soil; sprinklers suit this stage. Then irrigate about every 8–10 days in the tillering (36–100 days) and grand growth (101–270 days) phases, and every 10–14 days in the maturity phase.

  • Weed control without herbicide

Where weeds are heavy, do line weeding along the crop row and spade digging of the ridges on the 30th, 60th and 90th day after planting. (The source also lists pre-emergence atrazine or oxyfluorfen on the 3rd day.)
