Sugarcane

Sugarcane — 3Land preparation & sowing

  • Field preparation and manure (garden land)

Plough deep, pulverise to a fine tilth free of weeds and stubble, and level the field for good irrigation. Open ridges and furrows 30 cm deep and 80 cm apart, with irrigation channels every 10 m. Before the last ploughing, apply FYM at 12.5 t/ha, or compost at 25 t/ha, or filter press mud at 37.5 t/ha.

  • Seed rate and planting

Use 75,000 two-budded setts per hectare. Place the setts along the centre of the furrows at 12 buds per metre, with the buds facing sideways, and press them gently into the soil. In wetland, irrigate the furrows first to make a slurry and cover exposed setts with soil the next day. In garden land, arrange the setts, cover with soil and then irrigate. Plant extra setts near the channel (or double rows every 10th row) for later gap filling.

  • Gap filling, trash mulching and intercrops

Fill gaps with two-budded setts or poly-bag seedlings within 15–20 days of planting (sprouted setts within 30 days), and keep adequate moisture for 3 weeks. Within a week of planting, mulch the ridges with cane trash 10 cm thick — it conserves moisture, reduces weeds and shoot borer (avoid it where termites occur). With adequate irrigation, sow one row of soybean, black gram or green gram along the ridge centre on the 3rd day.
