Sugarcane — 2Seed selection & treatment

  • Selecting and treating setts

Take seed material from a 6–7-month-old crop free from pests and diseases. Detrash by hand, cut setts with a sharp knife or sett cutter without splits, and discard setts with damaged or sprouted buds. Dip the setts for one hectare for 30 minutes in a slurry of 2 kg Azospirillum (or Gluconacetobacter), 2 kg phosphobacteria and 2 kg SSB before planting. Aerated steam at 50°C for one hour controls primary infection of grassy shoot disease.
