Tea — 3Land preparation & sowing

  • Cuttings and planting

Take semi-hardwood cuttings (one full leaf and an internode, slanting cut) from healthy, high-yielding mother bushes in April–May or August–September. Root them in polythene sleeves filled with sand–soil mixture under shade and small polythene tents; rooting takes 10–12 weeks. Harden 4–6-month-old plants by gradually increasing sun exposure over 4–6 weeks. Plant in May–June or September–October: single hedge 1.20 x 0.75 m (10,800 plants/ha) or double hedge 1.35 x 0.75 x 0.75 m (13,200 plants/ha).
