    • Zinc and iron

In zinc-deficient soils, apply zinc sulphate at 37.5 kg/ha for hybrid maize and 25 kg/ha for varieties. For zinc and iron deficiency seen in plants, spray 0.5% ZnSO4, or 1% FeSO4 + 0.1% citric acid, three times on the 30th, 40th and 50th day after sowing.

    • Zinc and iron deficiency signs

Zinc: symptoms first appear in newly formed leaves at 20–30 days; older leaves show yellow streaks or striping between the veins. Iron: yellowing between the veins (interveinal chlorosis) in newly formed leaves; if it continues, the whole leaf turns pale and the crop can look bleached, dry up and die. For iron deficiency in a direct-sown crop, spray 1% FeSO4 + 0.1% citric acid three times when symptoms appear.

In the mid-flowering phase (58–60 days for long-duration and 45–48 days for short-duration varieties), improve pollination between 9 and 11 a.m. by gently rubbing the flower heads with a hand covered in soft cloth, or rubbing two flowers face to face. • Curd problems and their causes

Browning (brown rot) is caused by boron deficiency: spray 1 kg borax in 500 litres of water 30 days after planting. Whiptail (only the leaf midrib develops) is caused by molybdenum deficiency, worse in acidic soil: spray 100 g sodium molybdate in 500 litres of water 30 days after planting. Buttoning (small curds) comes from nitrogen deficiency or planting early varieties late; avoid transplanting old seedlings. Blindness (no terminal bud) is linked to low temperature.
