  • Raising a ratoon crop

Within 10 days of harvesting the plant crop: remove the trash from the field (do not burn it) and irrigate well; shave the stubble 4–6 cm deep along the ridges with sharp spades; break compaction along the ridge sides; fill gaps within 30 days of stubble shaving, best with sprouted stubbles from the same field; and apply the basal organic manure and super phosphate as for the plant crop. Apply 25% extra nitrogen 5–7 days after ratooning.
