Oil palm needs 21–32 °C with at least 5 hours of bright sun a day, about 200 cm of rain, 75–100% humidity, and moist, deep, humus-rich loam with good permeability (pH 4–6); the source gives 450–900 m as the altitude. It needs assured, adequate irrigation. Tenera — a cross of thick-shelled Dura and shell-less Pisifera — is the main hybrid, with a thin shell and high oil content.
