Green gram suits a tropical and sub-tropical hot climate and needs well-distributed rainfall. Heavy rain at flowering is harmful; even moist winds at this stage interfere with fertilization. It tolerates drought to a great extent and is considered the hardiest of all pulse crops. It is a day-neutral plant.
