Elephant foot yam

Elephant foot yam — 3Land preparation & sowing

  • Planting

Planting season: April–May (farmers also plant in February–March so setts sprout with pre-monsoon showers; the corm has a 45–60 day dormancy). Cut corms into 750–1000 g pieces, each with part of the bud ring, or use whole 500 g corms; remove the small tender buds ("arumbu"). Dip pieces in cow-dung solution. Plant in beds at 45 x 90 cm, or in 60 x 60 x 45 cm pits filled with topsoil and 2 kg FYM, keeping the bud ring above the soil — about 3500 kg of corms per hectare. Sprouting takes about a month.
