Apply fertilizers basally before sowing. Rainfed: 12.5 kg N + 25 kg P2O5 + 12.5 kg K2O + 10 kg S per hectare. Irrigated: 25 kg N + 50 kg P2O5 + 25 kg K2O + 20 kg S per hectare. Under irrigation, apply 25 kg ZnSO4 per hectare with 50 kg FYM or sand. If the soil is deficient, 10 kg borax and 0.25 kg ammonium molybdate can be applied.

Irrigation and foliar sprays
Irrigate immediately after sowing, give a life irrigation on the third day, then every 7–10 days. Flowering and pod formation are critical stages when irrigation is a must; avoid water stagnation. A spray of DAP or urea at 20 g per litre at flowering and again 15 days later increases flower number and pod setting.

Weed control
If no herbicide is used, give two hand weedings on the 15th and 30th day after sowing. (The source also gives pendimethalin 0.75 litre per hectare on the 3rd day followed by one hand weeding at 30 days.)
