Cowpea is called the "hungry-season crop" because it is harvested before the cereal crops. It tolerates shade and can be combined with tall cereals such as sorghum and maize. It is sensitive to waterlogging, though less than other legumes. High moisture can bring many diseases, and frost can damage the plant at flowering.
