Arecanut (vakka/poka) grows in many well-drained soils, from 4 to 40 °C, up to 1000 m, with 750–4500 mm rain, but needs assured water as it is sensitive to moisture stress. Protect palms from the south-western sun: plant quick-growing shade trees on the south and west sides well in advance. Planting season: June–December. Varieties include Mangala, Sumangala, Subamangala, Mohitnagar, Srimangala, Samruthi, Hirehalli dwarf, VTLAH 1, VTLAH 2 and Thirthahalli dwarf.
